A forehead lift, or brow lift, is designed to smooth the creases crossing your forehead and, to an extent, lines etched across the upper part of the bridge of your nose. A forehead lift will also tighten up and lift a low or sagging brow. The procedure should eliminate the lines that develop over the years commonly referred to as a “furrowed brow.” The other correction that a forehead lift achieves is elimination of the creases between your brows, referred to occasionally as ‘frown lines’.
There are a number of techniques used for this procedure. Some cosmetic plastic surgeons will make a series of small incisions above the hairline. Through those incisions, a tiny video device designed for surgery called an endoscope can be used to access the tissue and muscle beneath the forehead. The plastic surgeon can then remove tissue, reposition it or alter it in order to remove the furrows across the forehead.
Accessing the frown lines between brows is often done through incisions along the crease lines of the upper eyelids. This allows access to tissue that can be adjusted to smooth the wrinkles between the brows and across the bridge of the nose. The use of an endoscope in these procedures reduces the necessity for invasive techniques and minimizes recovery time. A sagging brow can be raised through incisions made at the temples and in the scalp. Tissue and muscle underlying the brow can be tightened and the brow raised along with it.
An alternative technique called the coronal brow lift allows for correction of the brow through an incision made from ear to ear. Excess skin can then be removed from the scalp which will in turn lift the forehead. While this technique allows for corrections in specific areas of the forehead it also requires a longer recovery time.
With any technique, there will be some swelling and bruising that will subside during your recovery period following the surgical procedure. The result will be a smoother brow and more youthful looking face. Some cosmetic surgeons will take steps to maintain the brow lift through the use of permanent sutures or small surgical fasteners. There are also absorbable fixation devices that can be placed in an inconspicuous manner at the temples. You should discuss the longevity of a forehead lift with your cosmetic surgeon, so that the likelihood of surgical revision or renewal is clear to you.
