Breast enlargement involves the insertion of an implant into each breast. These implants are flexible containers filled with either saline solution or silicone gel. The plastic surgeon will make an incision in one of three places: under the upper arm; along the crease beneath the breast; or around the areola.
The implant may be inserted behind the chest wall muscle; if so, the incision will be made under the arm. Otherwise, the implant is placed behind the tissue within the breast through one of the frontal incisions. The size and shape of the implant will depend on what result you and your cosmetic surgeon have settled on. The doctor will make a determination on implant placement based on what result you’re seeking and on your breast characteristics, elasticity and your body type.
It will take some days for the post-operation swelling to go down, but you’ll notice the change in your profile immediately. It will also take a couple of weeks for the implant to settle into place, so that it doesn’t feel intrusive.
Breast implants have a life span that usually requires replacement after a period of years. They can spring a leak which will lead to replacement. A leaking saline implant will be noticeable immediately; the saline solution will dissipate through your body. A silicone implant leak may just be a small amount of gel moving a short distance from the implant and you may not notice it at all.
Implants can also become inflexible over time and harden to the point that they look unnatural and feel uncomfortable. Until technology comes up with a better implant, revision surgery is usually an inescapable facet of living with breast enlargements.
