An arm lift is a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure applied to the upper arm – from the armpit to the elbow. The goal of the procedure is to reduce any loose skin that hangs from the arm in a loose, droopy fashion, as well as remove any pockets of fat that have formed in the upper arm. In addition the cosmetic surgeon will tighten the underlying tissue in the arm and smooth it. This inner tissue works to define the shape of the upper arm.
The incisions required for an arm lift extend from the underarm to just above the elbow. They are most often made on the back of the arm or on the inside, the portion of the arm that aligns with the body when the arm is hanging down. Through this incision, any fat to be removed will be taken out with liposuction or simply excised. The incision will leave a thin scar that will become less noticeable over time.
If the principal goal is simply to tighten the skin on the upper arm, the cosmetic surgeon may choose to make an incision in the underarm area and tighten the supportive tissue beneath the outer skin. The tissue is tightened and then sutured in place. This incision is well hidden and the scar will be unnoticeable in most circumstances.
Many people choose to have an arm lift in conjunction with a tummy tuck or other work on the lower body. The concept is the same: reducing slack skin and fat pockets in order to produce a more youthful profile. An arm lift is a relatively minor procedure, but can contribute a toned and shapely arm to a newly reduced midsection profile.
The arms will undergo some swelling and bruising, as with most cosmetic surgery procedures that involve removing tissue. The procedure will also remove any stretch marks that may have appeared on those arms over the years.
